ORAL CANCER SCREENING
3-5 MINUTES MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE

In the early stages of oral cancer's development, it often is painless, and the physical signs may not be obvious. This makes it a very dangerous disease.
Early indicators are: Red and/or white discolorations of the soft tissues of the mouth • Any sore which does not heal within 14 days • Hoarseness which lasts for a prolonged period of time.
Advanced indicators A sensation that something is stuck in your throat • Numbness in the oral region • Difficulty in moving the jaw or tongue • Difficulty in swallowing • Ear pain which occurs on one side only • A sore under a denture, which even after adjustment still does not heal • A lump or thickening which develops in the mouth or on the neck

RISK FACTORS YOU CAN CONTROL
TOBACCO USE in all its forms, tobacco is the largest contributor in the development of oral or mouth cancers. Not using tobacco is the single most important thing you can do to avoid oral cancers.
Excessive alcohol consumption. More than 15 alcoholic beverages per week may put you at greater risk. If you must drink, do so in moderation.
Combined use of tobacco and alcohol. This significantly increases the risk of oral cancer more than either by itself.
Excessive unprotected exposure to sun. Unprotected exposure to sun will increase the likelihood of lip cancers.

TOBACCO & PERIODONTAL DISEASE
Smoking is one of the most significant risk factors associated with the development of gum disease. Additionally, smoking can lower the chances for successful treatment. Symptoms of gum disease include: Bad breath that won't go away • Red or swollen gums • Tender or bleeding gums • Painful chewing • Loose teeth • Sensitive teeth • Receding gums or longer appearing teeth
